1.  Should I order the Serial Port or USB Port version of the WavPlayer?

USB (Universal Serial Bus) ports are available on most newer computers and generally have fewer compatibility problems than serial ports.  USB ports are supported on Windows 98/ME/2000/XP.  They are not supported on Windows 95/NT.   Serial Ports use an older technology, but are generally still available on most computers.  Serial Ports are supported on Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP.

2.  Will WavPlayer run on a Mac?

The WavPlayer software is written for use in Windows, and is not officially supported on Mac computers or with the Mac OS.

However, some customers with Intel-based Macs have reported successful use of the Bytescribe WavPlayer on a Mac when using the newest version of Parallels Desktop emulation software.

3.  Can WavPlayer be the default media player on my computer?

Yes.  WavPlayer can automatically be configured to be the default player for any of the following sound formats:  *.wav, *.dss, *.mp3 and *.vox.  Simply select the Tools | Make Default Player menu option from the WavPlayer menu.

4.  Is WavPlayer compatible with Microsoft Word and WordPerfect?

Yes.  WavPlayer will work with any standard word processor running in Windows.  A transcriptionist can control the play, pause, rewind and fast forward functions with a foot pedal while typing in any standard word processor.

5.  How quickly will I receive the WavPlayer once I place my order?

All orders are shipped via FedEx.  All domestic in-stock orders received and processed by 3:00 PM will be shipped out same business day.  Otherwise, orders are shipped out on the next business day.  If there is a problem processing an order, you will be notified by email.  FedEx Overnight orders are shipped for next business day delivery.  FedEx Express Saver orders are guaranteed by FedEx within 3 business days.

6.  What are the minimum computer requirements necessary for WavPlayer?

For the serial port version of WavPlayer, you can be running Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP and have an available serial port on your computer.  For the USB port version of WavPlayer, you can be running 98/ME/2000/XP and have an available USB port on your computer.  Minimum hardware requirements are 32 MB RAM, 133 MHz processor and 10 MB disk space.

7.  Can WavPlayer play .sri files created by the Voice It handheld recorder?

Files created by the Voice It recorder (.sri files) must first be converted to .wav file format before they can be played with the WavPlayer.  A free utility exists from the manufacturer of Voice It that will convert .sri files to .wav files.  This utility can be downloaded from the following site:  http://www.vxicorp.com/support/voiceit_software.asp#128  You will simply need to convert the files first, and then use the Bytescribe WavPlayer to transcribe them. Here is what is stated on the manufacturer's web site:

"The VTR compressed voiced files (.sri files) are in a proprietary compressed format and cannot be accessed and played with other software programs. However, non-recorder owners who receive .sri files from a recorder owner can download a free Voice It Player which will decompress and play .sri files."

8.  Can WavPlayer play .msv and .dvf files created by Sony handheld recorders?

The WavPlayer can play Sony .msv and .dvf files but a free "Plug-in" is required.  The plug-in can be downloaded from Sony's web site or by clicking here.  You do not need the plug-in if you already have Sony MemoryStick Voice Editor software installed on your computer.

9.  Can WavPlayer play .wav files created by Dictaphone or DVI (Rhetorex) systems?

Dictaphone and DVI systems create .wav files which require a special CODEC before they can be played by WavPlayer.  Click on the following links to download Dictaphone or DVI (Rhetorex) codecs.  Dictaphone .wav files can also be played by renaming the .wav extension to .vox and selecting the "8KHz ADPCM" setting in WavPlayer.

10.  If I'm not satisfied with WavPlayer, can I return it?

Bytescribe offers a 30 day return policy on its WavPlayer product.  If the product is returned within 30 days in its original condition, the purchase price of the merchandise will be refunded excluding any shipping charges and restocking fee.  Bytescribe must be contacted via email to receive an RMA number and instructions for return.

11.  What is your return policy?

Please see our return policy page.

12.  I receive an error when I first open my WavPlayer.  What do I do?

If you are receiving an "OLE Error", "Element Not Found", "Active Movie Error", or "amovie.ocx Error", it means that some component of Windows media is not correctly installed or registered, or you have an outdated version of Windows Media Player.  To resolve this try reinstalling Windows Media Player (available for download from Microsoft at www.microsoft.com) and then reinstall the Bytescribe WavPlayer.  Another way to correct this issue is to select Start -> Run and enter "regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\amovie.ocx".

13.  Whey I try to play certain files with my WavPlayer, "Error" appears and the files won't play.

If you try to play a particular file and the word "Error" appears in the bottom left corner of WavPlayer and the file won't play, it may mean that the file is not a compatible format.  If the file you are trying to play has a ".wav" extension, the file may require a unique CODEC that is not installed on your computer.  (For information on Codecs, click here.)   Also, verify that the correct file type is selected.  Select File | Open from the menu and choose the correct file type from the "Files of type" drop down list.

14.  I am trying to play .vox files, but they sound distorted.

The proper format may not be correctly set.  Click the Format menu option and select the proper format for your file.

15.  What can I do if I'm having problems with my serial or USB port pedal?

Visit http://www.bytescribe.com/support for information about troubleshooting serial and USB port problems.

16.  What if the file length is being misreported in WavPlayer when playing .dss files?

WavPlayer uses components of Windows MediaPlayer.  MediaPlayer 10 components can misreport the file length of files converted from .dss format.  Visit our support page for resolutions to this issue.

17.  Can I change my 9-pin port serial foot pedal to a USB port pedal using an adapter?

Bytescribe cannot guarantee that a serial foot pedal will work with a USB adapter. Drivers need to be installed first and not all adapters come with the drivers. If drivers came with the adapter, load the drivers and then check in Device Manager to see if it is listed under Ports. There should be an entry that lists the name of the adapter and the COM port it uses. A COM 5 or above listing will need to be checked as COM 4 in the WavPlayer program. If the adapter is not listed under Ports then it is not being recognized by the computer. Unfortunately, sometimes an adapter will not work on a computer and the only option is to purchase a USB foot pedal.

18. Can I play .vob files from a video DVD?

Playing .vob files requires your computer to have a DVD decoder and WavPlayer version 6.0.4 or later (select "Help | Check for Updates" from the WavPlayer menu to get the latest version).  If your computer has a DVD drive and software for playing DVD videos, you may already have a DVD decoder installed.  If you do not have a DVD decoder installed, you may do so by purchasing and downloading a decoder from the links on Microsoft's web site.  To play .vob files with WavPlayer, use the "WP6.exe" program located in the installation folder (usually "C:\Program Files\Bytescribe\WavPlayer").  If you have problems playing .vob files that are not on a DVD, try renaming the files to have an .avi extension.
